Suicide attempt on Silver Comet Trail in Rockmart

A female attempted suicide on the Silver Comet Trail in Rockmart on Monday, September 13, 2010. According to 911 scanner traffic, someone discovered a female on the trail unresponsive and barely breathing due to a gunshot wound to the chest.
Polk County 911 dispatched police, fire rescue and EMS to Coots lake Road at the Silver Comet Trail. County police, Rockmart police, EMS and rescue responded to the scene in emergency mode. 911 advised responders to use caution due to the fact that the female suffered a gunshot wound, it was possible that someone could be armed and still in the area.
Shortly after, 911 advised responders that the caller stated the gun was in the vicinity of the female, indicating that the wound was possibly self-inflicted. Medics arrived on the scene and quickly determined that this was in fact a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The patient was still breathing upon their arrival.
The victim was located about 1/4 mile from the trail head and was transported from the trail by Rockmart Police Department's ATV. Life-Flight was contacted and a landing zone was set up at Nathan Dean sports complex on the north end of the track.
The female did not have any identification on her. A Rockmart officer requested information regarding a case that he had previously worked stating that the female was possibly the same subject.
Officers recovered a 32 caliber rossi revolver at the scene.
The patient was transported via life-flight to Grady hospital in Atlanta.
