Ride #307 - 07/19/2009 - Tanasi/Ocoee, TN
Hared by Little Dinghy Tanasi trails, near Ocoee TN From your hare: I'm going to flat water kayak the upper Ocoee on Sat. and if anyone wants to join me, cost is $83 to kayak and camp. Kayak includes boat, lunch and guide (due to insurance). Camping is a four person hut, so no need for a tent. We'll likely do a group cooking gig, burgers/chicken with sides. If anyone wants to raft, a 1/2 day is $40. So a spouse that doesn't ride can goof off on the water at no major cost;)

The Tanasi Trail System at the Ocoee White Water Center contains many miles of trail for all skill levels. Your hare will mark trails suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. If you ride Blanket’s, Yargo or Yellow River you’ll enjoy Tanasi and the advanced riders already know all about TRE – Thunder Rock Express.
On Saturday a few of us will be FLAT water kayaking on the Ocoee, above the dam and camping in the area. Camping is $10 but it includes a TENT and alcohol is allowed on site. Four people sleep per tent. The Ocoee flat water kayaking is $73, is all day, and includes 14' kayak with rudder, life vest, paddle and lunch. We’ll also get paddling instructions and a couple of guides are also included. Combined cost is $83 (this is discounted off the normal rate). If you want to white water raft, cost is about $40/half day and $65/full day.
I know it is short notice but due to this being their busy season, we have to pay Monday 7/13. Refunds are next to nothing less than a week away, so we may as well suck it up and have some fun in the event of rain.
I plan to carpool on Saturday morning if anyone is interested in that option. Contact Patrick at patricksocial @ yahoo if you want to kayak and/or camp.
Directions from Atlanta:
If you know how to get to the Ocoee Whitewater Center, the starting location for the hash will be two miles before the center.
If not: Take 75 N to 575, continue on 575, which becomes HWY 515/GA5 thru Canton, Cartersville and to Ellijay
(in Ellijay, you’ll pass the Hardees on the left/turn off to Fort Mountain/Bear Creek and continue on 515)
Continue driving thru Ellijay, approaching Blue Ridge
Go Left on GA HWY 5 aka Blue Ridge Drive (McDonald’s on the corner and HomeDepot is just off the road on the left)
Come into McCaysville (GA)/Copperhill (TN), it ends at a “T” in the “old downtown square/Mayberry” go left which is HWY68
You enter Tennessee, leave the downtown and continue on HWY 68
After 3-5 miles you’ll come to HWY 64. Take 1st exit to the right and at the stop sign, go Left/West on HWY 64
Go about 5 miles, past a few rafting companies and look for hash signs. If you see or pass the Ocoee Whitewater Center (lots of flags from the ’96 Olympics) on the left, you’ve gone too far.
Start 1:00pm EST
Ride time is 1:30 EST.
